Five surfers, one breakwater, and the wrong idea about safety. A beginner who could not swim lost his depth beside the south breakwater and was carried out past the tetrapods. Everything that followed turned on four judgements. This is the account of participant E, drawn as an animation.

1The setting

Ōarai Sun Beach is a sand beach on the Ibaraki coast. At its south end a rock breakwater armoured with tetrapods runs out from the sand toward the sea, angling seaward and bending part way along its length. The water on either side of it is deeper than it appears from the beach, and the current alongside it sets seaward.

On the morning of 8 August the forecast swell was 1.3 m at a 10.3 second period from the east-southeast. In the water it felt closer to 1.5–2 m, and the sets arrived without long gaps between them. That last detail matters more than the height: the absence of a lull is what shaped every decision that followed.

2The five

3Seven positions

The reconstruction is carried by seven numbered positions. They are numbered in story order, not geographic order.

  1. E's lineup, north of the breakwater. Where the story starts and where E is when D shouts.
  2. Where A loses his depth and calls for help — roughly level with the inner breakwater, on its north side.
  3. The tetrapods themselves, near the seaward bend. Where A is wedged between blocks and both boards are destroyed.
  4. Just clear of the blocks, where C leaves A and B. Still only metres from the rocks — not safe.
  5. D's lineup, about 20 m from E.
  6. About 30 m offshore of ④. The holding point, out of reach of the breakwater.
  7. Standing depth near the beach. The end of the incident.

4Sequence of events

Before. E is surfing at ①, D at ⑤. A and B are out on rental boards. Nobody is watching anybody.

A loses his depth (②). A drifts to where he can no longer stand. He cannot swim. He shouts "Help! Help!" for roughly five minutes. Nobody around him notices — the surf noise and the ordinary sight of a person beside a board hide it completely.

A is carried out. A cannot reach the breakwater on his own. The current alongside it carries him past ③ and out to its seaward side, away from the beach.

B reaches him. B, also a beginner, paddles out to A. B judges: "if we can get up onto the breakwater, we're saved." That judgement is the pivot of the whole incident, and it is wrong — the breakwater is where the waves are breaking hardest.

The tetrapods (③). They move to the blocks and try to climb out. Set after set breaks straight onto the rocks. A wave drives A into a gap between two tetrapods and he is wedged there. Successive waves slam him against the concrete; he is cut and bleeding. His board is not stuck in the blocks — the endless sets throw it against them again and again until it is wrecked. B's board is destroyed the same way.

C intervenes. C, an intermediate surfer, reaches the breakwater, climbs up onto the tetrapods, braces against the sets and hauls A out of the gap, then gets both A and B clear to ④.

E is alerted. E rides a wave in from ①. About 20 m away, D at ⑤ is shouting and pointing at ④.

E's approach. Rather than cutting straight across, E paddles out first and comes back in from seaward — going out and around is faster than fighting the sets broadside. He finds A and B hanging off a single board, A exhausted. "You're OK, you're OK."

The tow (④ → ⑥). E judges that ④ is not safe: one more set puts them back into the rocks. He gets both of them onto his board and has them hold his leash; C pushes from behind. They cover about 30 m of water straight into the swell. It takes maybe five minutes, though it felt like ten.

The wait (⑥). At ⑥ the pull toward the rocks is gone. "We're all right now." But the sets toward the beach do not ease. They wait five minutes, then another five to ten.

The run in (⑥ → ⑦). E stops waiting for calm water and decides to use the waves instead. "When a big one comes: hold your breath, and do not let go of the board." Three or four big waves carry them in to ⑦, where they can stand.

5The decision points

The account is built around judgement, not around drama. Four decisions define it.

  1. B: "the breakwater means safety."Wrong. Structures concentrate breaking waves; the rocks were the most dangerous water available.
  2. C: climb onto the blocks.Correct here, but only because C could read the sets and brace. It is not a general recommendation.
  3. E: ④ is not a rescue, it is a pause.Distance from the structure comes before everything else, including getting to the beach.
  4. E: stop waiting for a lull.When the sets will not ease, the waves become the way in rather than the obstacle — with a brief, explicit instruction given to two exhausted beginners.

6Aftermath

A had cuts and bleeding from the tetrapods at ③. Both rental boards were destroyed, at ¥40,000 each — ¥80,000 in total. Nobody drowned.

Reading the animation. A and danger are red, B amber, C green, E blue, D neutral grey-blue. Figures are always a board plus a rider, so paddling reads from above. Elapsed time is compressed — the swell period was 10.3 s, far slower than the animation plays. Times and distances are as recalled by participant E and are approximate.
