Overview

Five surfers, a beginner who couldn't swim, and a tetrapod breakwater. I collected the account through a structured question form, turned it into a production brief, and had it built as a two-minute animated reconstruction.

On 8 August, five surfers at Ōarai Sun Beach in Ibaraki Prefecture had a morning that came very close to a fatality. A beginner who could not swim lost his depth beside the south breakwater and was carried out past the tetrapods. Nobody drowned. Two rental boards did not survive.

I wasn’t there. The account comes from participant E, the most experienced person in the water that day, and I collected it from him with a written question form rather than a conversation — a fixed set of questions about conditions, positions, timings, and, above all, what each person decided and why. That form and the resulting brief are what the animation was built from.

Why a question form rather than a chat

An incident account given freely tends to arrive as a story: what it felt like, what was frightening, what happened next. That is not the shape you need to draw one. To reconstruct an incident you need geometry and sequence — where each person was, in what order, how far apart, and how long each phase took — and those details are exactly what a narrator skips, because to the narrator they were never in doubt.

So the form asked for them explicitly, and it forced two things the free account did not contain:

  • Numbered positions. Seven of them, numbered in story order rather than geographic order, so every later question could refer to “position ④” instead of “just past the rocks.” The whole reconstruction hangs off that numbering — the movement chain is simply ② → ③ → ④ → ⑥ → ⑦.
  • Decisions separated from events. For each person, not only what they did but what they believed at the time. This is what turned a rescue story into something worth drawing.

The result was a production brief: conditions, a table of five people (A–E) with experience level and role, the seven positions, the sequence of events, four decision points, the aftermath, and a set of drawing conventions.

What actually happened

The short version. A drifts out of his depth at ②, cannot swim, and shouts for help for about five minutes — nobody notices, because a person standing beside a board in the surf looks exactly like everybody else. The current alongside the breakwater carries him past ③ to its seaward side.

B, also a beginner, reaches him first and makes the call that defines the whole incident: if we can get up onto the breakwater, we’re saved. They move to the tetrapods. Set after set is breaking straight onto the rocks. A wave drives A into a gap between two blocks and wedges him there; successive waves slam him against the concrete until he is cut and bleeding. Both boards are thrown against the tetrapods repeatedly until they are wrecked.

C, an intermediate surfer, climbs onto the blocks, braces against the sets, hauls A out of the gap and gets both beginners clear to ④. D, surfing 20 m away, shouts and points until E sees it.

E’s part is the interesting one, because it is three deliberate judgements in a row:

  1. He does not cut straight across to ④. He paddles out and comes back in from seaward — going around is faster than fighting sets broadside.
  2. He treats ④ as a pause, not a rescue. It is metres from the rocks, and one more set puts them back in. He puts both of them on his board, has them hold his leash, and tows them 30 m further offshore to ⑥ while C pushes from behind.
  3. At ⑥ he waits for a lull, and the lull never comes. After ten to fifteen minutes he stops waiting and uses the sets instead: when a big one comes, hold your breath and do not let go of the board. Three or four waves carry them to standing depth.

The one thing worth taking away

Breakwaters, jetties, headlands and tetrapod fields look like safety when you are in trouble in the water. They are solid, they are above the surface, and they lead back to land. That is exactly why beginners swim toward them.

They are also where wave energy concentrates. The rocks were the most dangerous water available that morning, and the decision to head for them — made by someone with the best of intentions, for someone who could not swim — is what turned a drift into an injury and two destroyed boards.

The corollary is E’s second judgement, and it is the counter-intuitive one: getting away from the structure comes before getting to the beach. Offshore, into the swell, away from the thing that looks like rescue.

Notes on building it

The brief specified the conventions rather than leaving them to the renderer, which is what kept the result honest:

  • Zoom in from country to region to beach, then an overhead satellite map for the main narrative, with two 3D cutaways and a side-view cross-section of the tetrapod gap cut into it.
  • Stick figures throughout — always a board plus a rider, so paddling reads correctly from above. Never a bare board.
  • A and danger in red, B amber, C green, E blue, D neutral grey-blue. Two accents on a dark ground.
  • Captions one line at a time, matter-of-fact, no narration of emotion beyond what the account states.
  • Swell motion slow. A 10.3 second period animated at video pace reads as a completely different ocean.

The brief also lists the accuracy traps — the details a model reconstructing this will get wrong by default, because the dramatic version is more natural than the true one. A never reaches the tetrapods under his own power; he is carried past them. His board is loose, not wedged. A is not lying on a board while C rescues him — he is stuck in the gap. And C, the person who does the hardest physical part, is not the most experienced person present.

Times and distances are as recalled by participant E and are approximate. This is a personal record, not an incident report, and it has not been checked against any external source.
